Nilgün Feuerhake (61 years)

loves the variety and freedom you find in Berlin.

Where do you work?

I work as a sales engineer at Stadler Germany. We are a manufacturer of rolling stock. We produce tramcars, mainline trains, underground trains and commuter trains. The ones we are currently building are for the Berlin underground and commuter railway networks, among others.

I work in a large team. Our job is to monitor the market, take part in tenders and prepare bids. We also participate in the negotiations once we have sent out the bids. My job is extremely varied.

Why did you choose Berlin?

I did not pick Berlin in the beginning. That was my parents. I came to Berlin in 1970 and often spent time in other cities and countries after that. But I always returned to Berlin. I love the city. Berlin is my home. I feel welcome here.

What do you love about Berlin?

The variety and the freedom. There are so many opportunities here. You just need to reach out and grasp them. Everything is possible in Berlin – professionally and personally.

Who or what helped you to settle in when you first arrived in Berlin?

I am a native of Turkey. I was born in Istanbul and came to Berlin when I was eight. It was difficult in the beginning, because I did not speak the language. I would advise everyone to learn the language first. Being able to speak the language keeps all your options open.

If you could give a new Berliner a tip, what would it be?

Come here in spring! Berlin is the most beautiful, colourful and greenest European city in spring. This makes it easier to find your feet.

Another tip: always smile at people! Don’t be shy. Smiling really makes a difference. You will quickly make friends in Berlin. Everything is easier here if you are approachable.
