What exactly is your role in the company?
At the moment I am working on a new project from sygns – a Berlin company that produces, among other things, neon logos and other neon objects for private and business customers. In this project, we are developing intelligent design lamps that you can control with your smartphone. My tasks lie specifically in technical development: I am responsible for the hard- and software of the product. For this reason, I work hand-in-hand with my colleague who develops electronics.
What do you find fascinating about your job?
The freedom to create something and play a significant role in its production from the start. I find it fascinating how you can combine technical knowledge with objects so that they end up functioning. After all, whether an object works or not is all that counts! How I get to this point is my business - that's the kind of freedom I'm talking about. I solve technical problems in my own way and not according to prescribed standards.
Why did you decide to work for a Berlin company?
I was already in Germany before my job at sygns – in Frankfurt am Main, to be more precise. I thought that Frankfurt, as a financial center, would have lots of interesting companies and potential. I was looking for a job in a company that would have exciting tasks waiting for me, and that had English as their business language, since my German still isn’t very good. Eventually I came to Berlin (as well as sygns). Berlin is definitely the number 1 city to come to if you want to speak English at work and learn German independently on the side. Nowhere in Germany are there so many English-speaking companies as here in Berlin.
