Where do you work?
I work at Gebr. Tonsor as an interior decorator. I'm also completing my master craftman's diploma. The master craftman's diploma consists of four parts – I've already validated the technical skills and instructor's certificate. I will complete the theory and practice portions shortly.
Have you every thought of leaving Berlin?
Yes, sure. But never to the extent of actually making any serious plans. I wouldn't do it now. If ever a city in Germany was of interest to me, it would be Berlin. This city inspires me. I'm doing well here, I have the opportunity to continue my training and gain experiences. Why would I go anywhere else?
What do you love about Berlin?
I love the mix of people – the stylish housewife comes to the city to get inspired... the fast-paced businesspeople, the new Berlin residents, the tourists. Living in Berlin, you have the opportunity to discover new things every day. The architecture alone – the charming old buildings, the nested streets and apartment buildings. History was made in this city, and you can feel that every day.
If you could give a new Berlin resident a tip, what would it be?
Berlin has a very casual and relaxed reputation. But don't make the mistake of expecting that from your job. Working life here is not relaxed. The business side of Berlin is fast-paced, goal-oriented and professional. If you want to be successful here, you have to take your job seriously. Experience the romantic side of Berlin in your private life, not your professional one!
Privately, I recommend you explore the quiet corners of Berlin – discover the outskirts. And the weekly markets, like the one on Winterfeldplatz or at Maybachufer. You can buy food, fabrics and artwork there. Berlin's markets are very multicultural and worth seeing. My personal oasis is the city's old cinemas and swimming pools, such as the Neukölln Stadtbad swimming pool or the Casablanca cinema in Adlershof and the Passage cinema in Neukölln.
