Where do you work?

I work at Caroobi, a Berlin start-up. We offer an online service for people looking for a reliable solution for the repair of their vehicle. On our website, users can find a TÜV-approved workshop in their local area that will repair their vehicle for a binding fixed price. As a UX designer, I work on the graphic design and the development of our website. To do this, I analyze the users that visit our site, and find ways and means to bring them to the desired place quickly and efficiently. I design processes and images to be user-friendly, making caroobi.com as easy as possible to use.

Why did you decide on Berlin?

Four years ago, I traveled through Europe by bicycle together with my wife. We cycled from Oslo to Croatia, visiting a friend in Berlin on the way. We stayed with him for a week and immediately decided that we wanted to live in Berlin at some point. When we were back in Korea, the thought simply never let go. We still mulled over alternatives, such as London, San Francisco or New York, but Berlin won out in the end. You know, the start-up scene in Berlin is huge and UX designers have excellent chances of finding work here. That was the second, pivotal reason together with my already existing love for Berlin.

Who or what made your first days in Berlin easier?

Good question. At first I thought that a few Korean websites would help me: it’s a long story but in any case it turned out that I was wrong about that. In the end, a friend who already lived in Berlin offered support, especially with the translations for administrative matters. I was really lucky!

When I started to work for Caroobi, the HR team helped me with visas. That was really a big help. In private matters I have to say that I didn’t need so much help. I have already traveled quite a lot in my life and always got along well no matter where I was.

What do you like in particular about Berlin?

My wife, my child and I are huge fans of the Berlin Zoo. We have a season ticket and visit the zoo at least twice a month; when we have the chance, we visit every weekend. You can observe the animals up close – it’s not every zoo that can offer that. In bad weather, I can really recommend the indoor aquarium in particular.
