Where do you work?

I work as a graphic designer at sygns – a Berlin company that produces neon logos and other neon objects for private and business customers. As part of the communications team, I prepare previews of requested neon objects. I come up with ideas on how to realize the customer’s expectations and adjust the ideas graphically. Additionally, I create flyers and posters for our events. Last year there was a charity event, for example, for which we collaborated with a Syrian artist. He wrote a poem which we then converted into a neon sign. The individual neon objects were sold for a good cause. It was great!

Why did you choose Berlin?

I am Austrian by birth and previously lived and worked in Paris, but Berlin … Berlin is simply a good option for graphics, design and art. The city has always interested me. Here I find that young people are taken seriously and have great opportunities to develop even further. I applied to sygns whilst I was still living in Paris and when I was accepted, I knew I just had to move to Berlin.

Who/what made your first phase in Berlin easier?

When I started work at sygns, there were other employees who were also only just starting. We got on well immediately and went out into the city to explore. Additionally, I already knew several people who have lived here for quite some time. They showed me “their” Berlin. It is easy to establish connections in Berlin – everyone is very open and helpful.

What do you love about Berlin?

In Berlin, you can do what you want and are not forced to conform to prescribed standards. Everyone does their own thing and despite this, you will still find that you have something in common with almost everyone. Whether you are a lawyer, a graphic designer or a teacher, people meet up after work to have a chat – but they don’t just talk about everyday work! Berliners have interesting and open personalities – I feel happy here.

If you could give a tip to someone who is new to Berlin, what would it be?

Don’t let Berlin’s stimulating atmosphere intimidate you – go your own way!  When you go your own way with confidence, Berlin is a great city that offers lots of opportunities. Also, make good use of the city’s cultural diversity. There is something new to discover every day. In summer, I would recommend going to the Museuminsel – the perfect spot for relaxing.
