Launched in November 2014 by Thibaud Hug de Larauze, Quentin Le Brouster, and Vianney Vaute, Back Market is the #1 marketplace for refurbished electronic devices in Europe and in the US. We’re leading the way in a shift towards a circular economy, freeing the planet from electronic waste. We are proud to sabotage ‘new’ by connecting highly certified professionals to consumers who are looking for a more affordable, reliable and ecological alternative to purchasing brand new products.
Back Market is undergoing meteoric growth and has raised over 884M€ already! We have the objective of reaching 1000 Back Makers (or Saboteurs) by the end of 2022!
What are your plans in Berlin?
Germany is one of Back Market’s biggest and fastest growing markets. Not only do we plan to expand the growth of our platform, but we're also investing in the development of a truly circular ecosystem to save the world from unnecessary e-waste and save primary resources consumed by the overproduction of new electronics.
We are advocating for public awareness regarding the importance of refurbishment and circularity. The core of the circular ecosystem is powered by world class technology. We're acting both locally and scaling up globally. Because of the rapid growth of the German market, we decided to expand one of our offices in Berlin. Our goal is to reach 50 people by the end of the year.
On an economic note, today, the market for used and refurbished devices accounts for less than 10% of the ‘new market’. We believe we can achieve what the car market achieved years ago: having more used devices going around, instead of brand new products. We are now working hard to realize our vision, which is to grow the refurbished market enough to overtake the ‘New market’ within the next 5-10 years.
