Where do you work?

I work as a HR Manager at McMakler, a real estate service provider. We support real estate brokers by offering them technological improvements to their sale and rental processes. Our services range from creating the online presence including a property specification, to arranging appointments with buyers or potential tenants, organising property viewings, creating contracts, and much more. This means that the traditional real estate business is united with digitalisation and allows real estate agents to concentrate more strongly on their core business.

My main task is recruiting; in other words, I ensure that our company grows by recruiting the right people – specifically in the fields of IT, Marketing, Finance, and Sales. In my day-to-day work, I look for suitable candidates to fill available jobs, check incoming application documents, conduct interviews, and manage the applicants. Additionally, I also take care of personnel development and employer branding.

Why did you choose to live in Berlin?

I’m originally from Ecuador and moved to Germany eight years ago. I studied in Heidelberg and completed an apprenticeship in Frankfurt. However, I’ve always been fascinated and enchanted by Berlin. One thing was clear to me: once I’m finished with my education, I’m moving to Berlin. That was the plan and now – here I am!

Who or what made settling into Berlin easier for you?

My friends, specifically my best friend. We grew up together and have known each other since we were five years old. She has been living in Berlin for six years and helped me to find my feet here.

What do you love about Berlin?

In Berlin, you can be whatever you want to be. Nobody looks at you strangely. The contrasts in this city are huge but also normal. I really like that. And you can also do and experience so many different things in Berlin. Whether you’re a culture vulture, party animal, or more the laid-back type – Berlin has something for everyone. This makes living here very varied and broadens your horizons.

If you could give a newcomer to Berlin one tip, what would it be?

Start looking for somewhere to live before you move here. Finding an apartment here can be very complicated and requires a lot of preliminary work. And when you’re here, try out all the different restaurants and cafés the city has to offer – the food scene is huge, very special, and very tasty.
